Nat Clifton was the first African-American to sign a contract in the NBA; he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
In 2005, the New York Knicks renamed their monthly "City Spirit Award" to the "Sweetwater Clifton City Spirit Award", which is given to a community member who works to make their tri-state area better.
