Instructional Programs provide more focused instruction in a group of 8-10 participants. Classes include topic specific equipment provided by UREC unless otherwise noted. There is an additional cost associated with these small group classes.
Our small group offerings are intended to provide a more intimate and committed environment for members of the gym to attend consistent classes over a specified number of weeks. Registration in advance is necessary to plan for classes. Registration for Specialty Group Classes occurs at the beginning of each academic semester.
Group Fitness Foundations is a 6-week specialty program introducing participants to intro-level versions of all UREC group fitness classes. Open to anyone wanting to begin their Group Fitness journey, the program emphasizes proper form, foundational movement, and confidence-building. Move with the same group each week to build community, explore different formats, and try something new in a welcoming, inclusive environment. No prior experience required.

Grab your friends and get ready to kick up your heels! This fun, beginner friendly class teaches easy to follow line dances while incorporating upbeat music, movement, and plenty of good vibes. Join us for a 6 week course where you’ll learn new steps and have fun every step of the way!

University Recreation's six week strength & conditioning program for women, led by women. Join one of our Certified Personal Trainers at Belk Gym Weight Room and prepare to build strength in traditional movements such as the squat, bench, and deadlift. Women & Weights will meet two days a week in the Belk Gym Weight Room. One day will be lower body focus, and the other day will be upper body focused. This program will also utilize some machines, dumbbells, and conditioning activities to prepare the body for everything. Strength is in, let's get strong together.

The Faculty/Staff Small Group Training program is designed specifically for UNC Charlotte faculty and staff who are new to exercise or looking to rebuild a safe, consistent routine. Led by one of our Certified Personal Trainers, Darryl, this beginner-friendly series offers personalized instruction within a small, supportive group of your campus peers. You’ll learn core strength movements, proper lifting mechanics, and functional cardio skills, all scaled to match your current fitness level.

Lift & Learn workshops are engaging and dynamic learning experiences designed to elevate your fitness journey. These workshops are intended to give beginner or experienced lifters a stronger understanding of a specific type of lift, including technique, tips, proper use of equipment, etc. There is no additional cost associated with these workshops!

You will also learn how to leverage automated Genius workout generation to instantly create custom training plans tailored to your specific goals. No weights? No problem. This 60-minute workshop teaches you how to build serious strength, control, and muscle using just your own body weight. We will break down the fundamentals of calisthenics, covering proper form for push-ups, dips, and core work. Whether you are working toward your first strict push-up or trying to master advanced holds, you will leave with progressions tailored to your fitness level. Come dressed to move!

This 60-minute interactive workshop begins with the quick "Assess Your Functional Wellness in Minutes" screen to highlight your personal movement strengths, mobility limits, and lifestyle habits. Ready to master the barbell? This 60-minute interactive workshop breaks down the "Big Three" compound lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. You will learn the mechanics behind these highly efficient, total-body movements to maximize your strength and prevent injury. This 60-minute workshop introduces the fundamentals of Pilates, focusing on deep abdominal engagement and proper spinal alignment. You will learn how to activate your core muscles correctly to improve your balance, reduce lower back pain, and support your heavy lifts in the weightroom. Come dressed to move!
Can’t do a strict pull-up yet, or want to increase your total reps? This 60-minute interactive workshop is for you. We will break down the exact mechanics of both the pull-up and chin-up, showing you how to target the right muscles and protect your shoulders. Our trainers will guide you through progressive variations using bands, lat pulldowns, and inverted rows so you can confidently build the upper-body strength needed to lift your own body weight. Our Group Fitness program offers customized classes for members! Whether you reach out as a student group, a Charlotte Athletics team, a Sport Club, or even an individual member, we are here to make Group Fitness as accessible as possible. To request a custom class, please fill out the Custom Class Request Form. Requests should be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the requested event.
